The Montreal Alouettes have signed Canadian defensive lineman Lwal Uguak after selecting him with the seventh overall pick in the 2023 CFL Draft.
The six-foot-five, 271-pound defender finished his collegiate career at Texas Christian University in 2022 where he made nine tackles and one fumble recovery in a depth role. He helped the club finish the regular season with a 13-2 record and qualify for the College Football Playoff National Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs.
The native of Edmonton, Alta. started his collegiate career at the University of Connecticut where he made 56 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, and four pass knockdowns in 48 games. He participated in rookie minicamps with the New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons.
The Alouettes also released 11 players, all of whom are American. These include receivers Ronnie Blackmon, Trevon Bradford, Hasise Dubois, Demetris Robertson, and Donald Stewart, offensive lineman Jalen Burks, defensive linemen Akial Byers and C.J. Wright, linebackers Jaylan Alexander and Rashaad Harding, and defensive back Coney Durr.
All CFL teams were required to trim their rosters to 75 players plus non-counters by late Tuesday night. A non-counter is any rookie who was drafted or attending training camp as a territorial exemption.
