The Toronto Argonauts will have history on their mind as they celebrate the team’s 150th anniversary in 2023, changing the shade of their helmets in homage to their roots.

On Friday, the Argos released a video revealing the new lids, which will be in the traditional shade of Cambridge blue worn by the Argonauts Rowing Club when it founded the club in 1873. Cambridge blue has always been one of the team’s official colours featured on their uniforms but had been used as a secondary highlight to the darker Oxford blue of their previous helmets and jerseys.

The helmet reveal comes just one day after the Argonauts teased the possibility of new jerseys in a video featuring quarterback Chad Kelly and defensive lineman Shawn Oakman. That announcement is scheduled to be made on Tuesday, May 23, but it appears that the changes to the helmet could not wait that long.

The Argos are the third CFL team to unveil a new uniform this offseason. The B.C. Lions unveiled a new “blackout” home look and “fog grey” jerseys for the road, while the Calgary Stampeders launched a revamped white and red away uniform while tweaking the rest of their outfits.

Toronto last changed their uniforms in 2019 and retouched the look a year later when they adopted a modernized version of the boat logo full-time.
