The Calgary Stampeders have signed versatile American defensive back De’Vante Cross.

A three-star recruit who was named Pennsylvania Player of the Year in 2015, Cross originally committed to the University of Virginia as a quarterback. After redshirting his first season, he saw action at QB, wide receiver and cornerback in 2017 and 2018, rushing five times for 27 yards, catching two passes for 28 yards and making 16 tackles.

Beginning in 2019, the six-foot-two, 215-pound athlete was permanently switched to the defensive side of the ball, making 34 total starts at safety. In 59 career games, he accumulated 129 tackles, seven tackles for loss. two sacks, six interceptions, and 21 pass breakups.

After going unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft, Cross signed with the Washington Commanders as an undrafted free agent and later attended training camp with the Green Bay Packers. He recently signed with the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars but was released less than a week later.
