The Toronto Argonauts have signed Canadian defensive back Royce Metchie to a two-year contract extension, keeping him with the team through 2024.
The 26-year-old started 17 regular-season games in 2022 after being acquired via trade from the Calgary Stampeders. The Brampton native recorded a career-high 72 defensive tackles and two interceptions, adding seven tackles in two playoff games to help the Argos win their 18th Grey Cup championship.
Originally selected with the 25th overall pick in the third round of the 2018 CFL Draft by Calgary, Metchie has played in 48 career CFL games. The Guelph product has tallied 151 defensive tackles, 13 special teams tackles and six interceptions in four seasons.
The five-foot-11, 197-pound safety is the older sibling of Houston Texans’ receiver John Metchie III, who was drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft after an outstanding collegiate career for Alabama. Metchie’s lone missed game last season came following his brother’s diagnosis with leukemia.
