The Calgary Stampeders have re-signed American linebacker Silas Stewart, the club announced on Monday. He was scheduled to become a free agent on Feb. 14.

The six-foot-one, 223-pound defender made 35 defensive tackles, 20 special teams tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble over 18 regular season games in 2022. He made three starts at middle linebacker while Jameer Thurman was out due to injury.

“I’m excited to be back here in Calgary,” said Stewart in a statement. “Now it’s time to get to work.”

The 27-year-old dressed for 30 career regular season contests for Calgary and made 42 defensive tackles, 29 special teams tackles, two knockdowns, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

“Silas is one of our young players who we’re looking forward to seeing make a big impact in 2023,” said general manager and head coach Dave Dickenson.

The University of the Incarnate Word product appeared in 21 games for the Cardinals and made 130 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, eight pass breakups, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and 0.5 sacks.
