The Toronto Argonauts have re-signed Canadian defensive end Robbie Smith, who made the winning play in their 109th Grey Cup victory.
The 25-year-old tallied four tackles and one sack in the championship tilt but committed a crucial penalty late in the game that put the Argos’ dream in jeopardy. He redeemed himself just a few plays later by blocking a potential game-winning field goal with just 54 seconds on the clock to seal the win and give Toronto their record 18th Grey Cup title.
Now entering his fourth CFL season, Smith posted 22 defensive tackles, seven special teams tackles, three sacks, one interception and one forced fumble in 17 games in 2022.
The Brampton native was originally selected with the ninth-overall pick in the second round of the 2019 CFL Draft after an outstanding collegiate career at Wilfrid Laurier. He has dressed for 45 career CFL games, amassing 61 defensive tackles, 14 special teams tackles, eight sacks, one interception and three forced fumbles.
