Defensive backs coach Alex Suber has left the Ottawa Redblacks to take a job at his alma mater of Middle Tennessee State University.

The 36-year-old started his coaching career at the high school level in 2015 and worked his way up to the college ranks by 2017. He became Ottawa’s receivers coach in 2019 under head coach Paul LaPolice, with whom he played as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 2010 to 2012.

“I am extremely grateful and honoured to be back at Middle Tennessee,” said Suber in a statement. “It has been nostalgic from the moment I stepped back on campus. I have had nothing but respect and love for Coach Stockstill as a former player and now being a part of the greatness he continues to build at MTSU.

“I can’t wait to get my wife and son settled in and get to work. I love Middle Tennessee. This is home.”

Suber was going to serve as Ottawa’s defensive backs coach in 2023 after a four-year stint working with the team’s receivers. He played defensive back in the CFL from 2010 to 2015 as a member of the Blue Bombers, Toronto Argonauts, and Saskatchewan Roughriders, recording 261 defensive tackles, 29 special teams tackles, four interceptions, and one sack over 76 games.

“I am excited to welcome Alex and his family back to Middle Tennessee,” said MTSU head coach Rick Stockstill. “He was an outstanding player here and has been exposed to a lot of football as a professional player in the Canadian Football League. He has experience coaching at the collegiate level and in the CFL. Alex will have an immediate impact on his players.”

Suber and his wife, Valentine, have one son.
