The Ottawa Redblacks have signed return specialist DeVonte Dedmon to a two-year contract extension.
The five-foot-ten, 200-pound speedster first joined the Redblacks as a free agent in 2019 and returned two kicks for touchdowns in just five games. He continued to break out after returning in 2021, recording 2,841 return yards with three return touchdowns to be named a CFL all-star and the league’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player.
Dedmon is the fastest player in CFL history to record five return touchdowns in a career, doing so in just 15 games. The previous record was set by Henry ‘Gizmo’ Williams of the Edmonton Football Team in 1987.
The 26-year-old signed with the Miami Dolphins this past off-season but returned to the Redblacks in August after being released down south.
“There’s nowhere else I’d rather be. This is home,” said Dedmon in a statement. “I’m excited to be back with my teammates and to have the opportunity to learn from this great coaching staff. I believe in this group. This is my family.”
Through 22 career games, Dedmon has recorded 23 receptions for 219 yards, 12 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown, 83 punt returns for 1,250 yards and three touchdowns, 73 kickoff returns for 1,947 yards and two touchdowns, and seven missed field goal returns for 185 yards.
