University of Ottawa linebacker James Peter has accepted an invitation to attend the 9th annual College Gridiron Showcase in Fort Worth, Texas.
The annual all-star event, which will take place from January 7 to 11, 2023, boasts 81 NFL alumni since its inception and has become a marquee event on the CFL scouting calendar in recent years. Notable players who have previously attended include Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ quarterback Dane Evans, Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ running back Brady Oliveira and Calgary Stampeders’ receiver Reggie Begelton.
A number of former first-round CFL draft picks have also attended the College Gridiron Showcase, including Toronto Argonauts’ offensive lineman Peter Nicastro, Ottawa Redblacks’ defensive back Adam Auclair, Calgary Stampeders’ receiver Jalen Philpot, and Edmonton Elks’ quarterback Tre Ford.
Peter was selected as a first-team All-Canadian at linebacker in 2022 after an outstanding senior season with the Gee-Gees. In eight games, the five-foot-10, 230-pound defender racked up 58 total tackles — good enough for second in the nation — while adding three tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.
In 30 career U Sports games, Peter has amassed 122.5 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. The Ottawa native attended the East-West Bowl last May, recording an impressive 4.77-second forty-yard dash in poor conditions while also jumping 36.5 inches in the vertical.
Attendance at CGS will allow Peter the opportunity to perform in front of NFL scouts during team and one-on-one drills, while also taking part in a game-speed scrimmage. He joins Concordia receiver Jeremy Murphy as Canadian university prospects already committed to the event, with more expected to follow.
