Western Mustangs’ running back Keon Edwards headlines U Sports players of the week

Western Mustangs’ running back Keon Edwards has been named the U Sports offensive player of the week following another sensational performance along the ground.

The Toronto native carried the ball 24 times for 136 yards and two touchdown this past weekend, helping Western defeat the visiting Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks by a score of 45-9. Edwards has rushed for at least 100 yards in all nine of his games this season and led all of U Sports during the regular season with 1,032 yards along the ground.

The Mustangs will host the Queen’s Golden Gaels this weekend in the Yates Cup for the second year in a row. Western won last year’s matchup by a score of 29-0 and has appeared in all but one Yates Cup dating back to 2015, winning three.

Mount Allison Mounties’ defensive lineman Vincenzo Frangione was named the U Sports defensive player of the week after recording 10.5 tackles against the Bishop’s Gaiters. The fifth-year defender helped his team advance to the Loney Bowl against the undefeated St. FX X-Men with a 15-12 win. Frangione recorded 27 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries during the regular season.

Queen’s Golden Gaels’ receiver and return specialist Richard Burton was named the U Sports special teams player of the week after returning a punt 45 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The score helped secure the team’s 35-13 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees and advance to the Yates Cup. Burton also led his team with five receptions for 108 yards in the game.
