UBC Thunderbirds’ running back Isaiah Knight has been named the U Sports offensive player of the week after helping lead his team to a 35-29 upset victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies.
The second-year ball carrier recorded 17 carries for 151 yards and one touchdown along with three receptions for 81 yards and two touchdowns. All three of the Ottawa native’s scores came from long distances, including a 45-yard reception, a 33-yard reception, and a 54-yard rush. He is now the eighth-ranked rusher in U Sports this season with one more game remaining on the schedule.
St. FX defensive lineman Zechariah Willems was named the U Sports defensive player of the week after recording five tackles and three sacks in the team’s 52-4 dismantling of the St. Mary’s Huskies. The second-year defender now has six sacks through six games this season, which ranks tied for sixth in the nation.
Concordia Stingers’ return specialist Santino Sparagna was named the U Sports special teams player of the week for the second consecutive week. He returned eight punts for 62 yards and four kickoffs for 125 yards for a total of 187, helping his team defeat the McGill Redbirds in overtime by a score of 37-30. His best return came midway through the fourth quarter when he brought back a kickoff 52 yards.
