There are only two weeks remaining in the CFL’s regular season, bringing us to the second-last offensive output report of the year. The league produced a new highest-scoring week just prior to the last report being filed and history repeated itself this past week.

Week 19 averaged a total of 63.5 points per game across its four games, surpassing the previous high of 63.0 points set in Week 15. The B.C. Lions led the way with 40 points in their victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday night, though all four games featured above-average point totals.

The number of punts lowered over the course of the three weeks since our last report as point totals increased. Janarion Grant returned a punt for a touchdown this past week and has recorded both of the league’s punt return touchdowns this year.

Offensive yardage remained flat from Week 18 to Week 19 despite scoring increasing by almost 20 points per game. Though the overall yardage remained virtually the same over the two weeks, the nature of the yardage changed as passing decreased by 8.5 percent while rushing increased by 20.5 percent. The league continues to feature below-average rushing totals, though production has slightly increased over the course of the season.

Games are averaging 50.6 points this season, which is 1.0 percent higher than the league’s average dating back to 2010. This marks a 14.2 percent increase from 2021 and a 2.2 percent increase from 2019. The league’s highest-scoring season since 2010 is still 2017 when teams averaged 53.1 points per game.

Punting is occurring at a rate of 11.2 per game, which is 15.8 percent lower than the league’s eleven-year average. The season that had previously seen the fewest punts since 2010 was 2016 when teams averaged 12.1 punts per game.
