The Montreal Alouettes are getting their most explosive offensive weapon back in the lineup at just the right time, as the team has activated star running back William Stanback off the six-game injured list on Thursday.

Stanback has missed almost the entirety of the 2022 campaign after suffering a broken ankle in the team’s season-opening loss to the Calgary Stampeders way back on June 9. However, he was allowed to return to practice in a limited capacity last week and is now expected to return to the team’s backfield after being activated.

Stanback recorded 193 carries for 1,176 yards and three touchdowns over 12 games last season, leading the league in rushing for the first time in his career. He also caught 16 passes for 114 yards and was named a CFL all-star.

The three-year veteran has been an explosive player since he joined the Alouettes in 2018, rushing for 2,763 yards and eight touchdowns over 42 career games.

Though the tandem attack of Jeshrun Antwi and Walter Fletcher has been a serviceable one for the Alouettes, Stanback’s return would be a huge boost to the organization ahead of the playoffs. Earlier this season, minority owner Gary Stern guaranteed that the team would win the Grey Cup if Stanback was able to play again.

The running back’s first chance to taste game action again could come on Monday, October 10 at 1:00 p.m. EDT, when the Alouettes (7-7) host the Ottawa Redblack (3-11).
