The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed American defensive back Desmond Lawrence, who was released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats this past week. He will be placed on the practice roster.
The North Carolina product played 10 games as a rookie with the Ticats in 2021 and recorded 22 defensive tackles, three special teams tackles, two interceptions, and one sack, earning the team’s nomination for Most Outstanding Rookie.
Despite that early success, Lawrence has spent much of his second campaign on the team’s practice roster. He dressed for only five games in a crowded defensive backfield this season, making four defensive tackles and two on special teams.
Lawrence played 47 collegiate games with the Tar Heels and registered 178 tackles, three interceptions, and 1.5 sacks. Lawrence later spent time with the Detroit Lions, the AAF’s Atlanta Legends, and the XFL’s DC Defenders.
Winnipeg’s secondary has been banged up this season with cornerback Demerio Houston (abdomen) and halfback Nick Taylor (Achilles) on injured reserve. The club traded for veteran defensive back Alden Darby on Tuesday and appear to have made this move to add more depth to the ailing unit.
