Queen’s running back Anthony Soles was named the U Sports offensive player of the week on Wednesday following a sensational performance in his team’s 62-11 victory over the Guelph Gryphons.
The native of Pointe-Claire, Que. carried the ball 19 times for 244 yards and four touchdowns, setting new career-highs in yardage and majors. He also set a new single-game high in rushing yards by any U Sports player this season.
The third-year running back has now rushed for 612 yards and seven touchdowns on the season, helping Queen’s to a 4-1 start. His average of 122.4 rushing yards per game is currently ranked first across the country.
Manitoba Bisons’ linebacker Dolan Hills was named the U Sports defensive player of the week after recording 6.5 tackles, two interceptions, and one sack in his team’s 46-4 win over the Calgary Dinos. The second-year from Red Deer, Alta. was a key part of the Herd’s defence, which limited Calgary to just 104 yards of net offence.
Ottawa Gee-Gees’ kicker Campbell Fair was named the U Sports special teams player of the week after booting a 55-yard game-winning field goal to lift his team to a 21-18 victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. The fourth-year’s kick tied Kevin Rydeard’s record for the longest field goal in OUA history, which stood unmatched for 40 years.
