The Edmonton Elks have added a pair of American defenders to their roster, signing defensive back Daniel Wright and linebacker Dontavious Jackson.
Wright spent five seasons at the University of Alabama from 2017 to 2021, racking up 115 tackles, one sack, two interceptions and 10 pass knockdowns in 58 games. The Florida native was not a full-time starter for the Crimson Tide but was part of a secondary that helped win two College Football Playoff National Championships (2017 and 2020) and three Southeastern Conference titles (2018, 2020, 2021). He most recently had a rookie mini-camp try-out with the Atlanta Falcons.
A former four-star recruit and consensus Top 5 player in the nation at his position, Jackson played four seasons at Florida State from 2016 to 2019. He recorded 154 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one interception and one forced fumble in 36 games for the Seminoles, but has been out of football since going undrafted in 2020.
The Elks also confirmed the signing of defensive lineman Tim Bonner, as first reported by 3Down‘s John Hodge on Thursday.
Bonner was released by the B.C. Lions on Wednesday after suiting up for 23 games over two seasons with the club, recording 27 tackles, seven sacks, and one forced fumble. The Florida Atlantic product is best known for his stint on the Netflix documentary series Last Chance U.
In corresponding moves, Edmonton released American defensive back Stefan Claiborne, American linebacker Nathaniel Evans, and National defensive back Ethan Makonzo.
Following their Week 16 bye, the Elks (4-10) are scheduled to resume play on Saturday, October 1 at 4:00 p.m. EDT when they host the Montreal Alouettes (6-7) at Commonwealth Stadium.
