The Hamiton Tiger-Cats are getting not one, but two of their top quarterbacks back in the lineup for their matchup with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday.
Dane Evans has been listed as the starter on this week’s depth chart after dressing as the third-stringer in the Ticats’ last game due to a nagging right shoulder injury. The 28-year-old has been in and out of the lineup at times this year due to the injury but has been a full participant in practice and said he’s “feeling great” earlier this week.
Evans has completed 67.0 percent of his passes this season for 2,473 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions along with 31 carries for 125 yards. He has started nine games on the year with his team going 2-7 in those contests.
Those disappointing numbers were leading to something of a quarterback controversy in Hamilton as backup Matthew Shiltz looked to be outplaying Evans until he suffered a wrist injury in Week 12. That was expected to keep him out of the lineup for at least four-to-six week but Shiltz will return to his backup role early, after practicing fully on Thursday.
The 29-year-old has completed 72.7 percent of his pass attempts for 748 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions through 11 games this season, starting two games. He has also rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown as the Ticats have employed a two-quarterback system at times.
Rookie Jamie Newman, who started for the team two weeks ago with very limited success, will dress as the team’s third-stringer.
Kickoff between the Ticats (3-9) and Bombers (12-1) is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton.
