The Edmonton Elks have released Canadian receiver Shai Ross, per sources.

Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2019 CFL Draft, the University of Manitoba product started 12 games for the Elks in 2021 and made 27 receptions for 369 yards and four touchdowns. His best game of the season came in Week 9 when he made three catches for 85 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-24 loss to the Ottawa Redblacks.

Ross dressed in both of Edmonton’s first two games of 2022, including a start against Saskatchewan, but had yet to record a catch on two targets. He has returned four kickoffs for 76 yards this season.

The 28-year-old Winnipeg native is best known for his freakish athletic ability, going viral in consecutive offseasons for videotaped stunts. He captured international attention for a perfectly timed backflip in which he successfully dunked an Oreo in a glass of milk ahead of the 2021 season, before backflipping with a loaded barbell this past April. Both videos have been viewed millions of times across all social media platforms, while the latter has featured heavily in the CFL’s 2022 marketing campaigns.

Before going viral, Ross set the CFL Combine record with an 11-foot, 5.5-inch broad jump in 2019.
