The Montreal Alouettes benched franchise quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. in favour of Trevor Harris during Thursday’s 20-19 loss to the Toronto Argonauts.

Adams was pulled early in the second quarter after completing two-of-four pass attempts for 14 yards and rushing twice for 11 yards. The club generated two first downs and three points over their first four possessions with Adams Jr. at the helm.

Harris drove the Alouettes 52 yards on his first possession at the controls, leading to a 26-yard field goal from David Côté. He finished the contest completing 18-of-30 pass attempts for 270 yards and one interception along with three carries for 20 yards.

The veteran quarterback orchestrated a 10-play, 59-yard drive in the final three minutes to set up a 21-yard field goal attempt, though Côté missed it wide to the left.

After the game, head coach Khari Jones told the media that he simply felt it was time to make a quarterback switch and that both players understood that course of action could be a possibility.

“I’m not sending any message or anything, I’m just trying to win football games. That’s all I’m looking to do,” Jones insisted. “We happen to have solid quarterbacks and it was just trying to get the best quarterback in there.”

Adams Jr. won Montreal’s starting job out of training camp and took every snap in last week’s 30-27 loss to the Calgary Stampeders. He completed 18-of-32 pass attempts in the game for 250 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The 29-year-old also rushed five times for 22 yards and one touchdown.

Harris was acquired via trade from the Edmonton Elks late last season and dressed for four regular-season games, completing 64-of-91 pass attempts for 703 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. He also started the East Semi-Final against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and threw for 364 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a 23-12 loss.

Jones would not name a starter for Week 3 immediately following the team’s defeat in Toronto, but will be under increased pressure to make the right decision as the rumoured hot seat underneath him continues to heat up.
