The Calgary Stampeders have signed defensive back Trumaine Washington, per sources.

The Stamps have some injuries in the backend and are relatively young in the secondary, adding Washington gives them experience and play-making ability. He was a free agent after the Ottawa Redblacks released him during the three-down league’s mandatory training camp roster cutdown.

The five-foot-nine, 189-pound cover man tied for the CFL lead with five interceptions last season in 14 games with the Edmonton Elks. He made 56 tackles, forced one fumble and scored one defensive touchdown while playing for the green and gold.

The 27-year-old Washington has suited up in 39 CFL games across three seasons. He spent two years with the Toronto Argonauts in 2018 and 2019, recording 56 tackles, five interceptions, one forced fumble and one touchdown in double blue.

The Miami native played NCAA football for the University of Louisville. He suited up in 42 games for the Cardinals, producing 141 tackles, 22 passes defended, 10 tackles for loss, 10 interceptions, four sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and scored two defensive touchdowns.

At his Louisville pro day in 2018, Washington ran 40 yards in 4.52 seconds, recorded a 4.33 shuttle, 6.88 three-cone time, 32.5-inch vertical and a nine-foot, five-inch broad jump.
