The Edmonton Elks have signed Canadian defensive back Ethan Makonzo.
Makonzo is the older brother of Enock Makonzo, who was selected by Edmonton in the first round of the 2022 CFL Draft. The Montreal native played U Sports football at the University of Montreal and was drafted 46th overall by the Montreal Alouettes last year. He was cut by the Als in May.
Edmonton also added Canadian quarterback Mike Beaudry to the practice roster and moved Canadian linebacker Wesly Appolon to the six-game injured list.
Beaudry rejoins the Elks practice roster after being released last week. He joined the Elks in April and recorded a defensive tackle in one preseason appearance against Winnipeg while playing primarily at the fullback position.
The Regina native played 11 games across a shortened spring campaign and 2021 regular season at the University of Idaho. He completed 188-of-301 passes for 2,093 yards with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions, while rushing for 165 more and a score.
Appolon was drafted in the fifth round, 49th overall, by the Elks in the 2022 CFL Draft. The Tuskegee University product was injured during Edmonton’s season-opener against the B.C. Lions after starting at weak-side linebacker.
Edmonton’s home-opener is scheduled for Saturday, June 18 against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Commonwealth Stadium.
