The Edmonton Elks have released Canadian receiver Tevaun Smith.
The Toronto, Ontario native was selected by Edmonton with the eighth overall pick in the 2016 CFL Draft and spent his two CFL seasons in green and gold, recording 82 catches for 956 yards and six touchdowns in 30 career games.
Prior to signing with Edmonton ahead of the 2019 season, Smith spent three seasons in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts, Oakland Raiders, and Jacksonville Jaguars (2016-2018). He played two games with the Colts in 2016 but never saw the field with either the Raiders or Jaguars during his stints with those teams.
The six-foot-two, 200-pound pass-catcher spent four years at the University of Iowa (2012-2015), catching 102 passes for 1,500 yards and seven touchdowns for the Hawkeyes. Smith appeared in the 2014 Outback Bowl, 2015 Taxslayer Bowl and 2016 Rose Bowl with the club.
Smith signed a one-year extension with the Elks on January 20, 2022.
Smith was a highly-touted prospect coming out of college. He was the top-ranked prospect on the initial CFL Scouting Bureau rankings released in September 2015 and ended as the second-ranked prospect on the final rankings that came out in April 2016, behind only Manitoba defensive lineman David Onyemata, who has gone on to have a productive career in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints.
