The Chicago Bears have claimed Canadian tight end Rysen John off waivers from the New York Giants, according to Field Yates.
The 24-year-old signed with New York after going unselected in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Simon Fraser University. He was waived by the team after training camp with an injury designation but joined their practice squad seven weeks later and remained on it for the rest of the season.
John returned to the Giants in 2021 and made six catches for 72 yards over two preseason games but was placed on injured reserve due to an ankle injury. He did not dress for a regular season game over his two years with the club.
The Vancouver native made 53 receptions for 861 yards and 10 touchdowns during his senior season at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. He played receiver in college at 237 pounds but built his frame to 255 pounds in order to play tight end at the NFL level.
The Calgary Stampeders selected John in the third round of the 2020 CFL Draft, which means they continue to hold his rights north of the border.
