Blue Bombers sign seven Americans, including John Carroll University QB Jake Floriea

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed quarterback Jake Floriea, running back Vance Barnes, receivers B.J. Muckelvene, T.J. Hammonds, and Tavonn Salter, as well as linebacker Darian Taylor and defensive back Javon Jackson.

The six-foot-one, 215-pound Floriea joins the Bombers after NCAA time spent at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Toledo, and John Carroll University. During 10 starts in his senior season at John Carroll, Floriea completed 63.9 percent of his passes for 2,515 yards with 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The Mentor, Ohio native also ran for another 204 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns. Floriea was a 2021 honourable mention All Ohio Athletic Conference player as well as a spring 2021 All Ohio Athletic Conference honourable mention.

Muckelvene comes to Winnipeg after a four-year NCAA career with the Wingate University Bulldogs. The five-foot-10, 195-pound Waxhaw, North Carolina native made an instant impact for the Bulldogs during his first full season, playing in all 11 games. The 24-year-old was All South Atlantic Conference in 2017 and 2019, and posted 107 catches for 1,713 yards and 17 receiving touchdowns during his college career.

Hammonds spent his five-year NCAA career with the University of Arkansas Razorbacks where he appeared in 50 games, rushing for 543 yards and two touchdowns. The Little Rock, Arkansas native also contributed out of the back field where he caught the ball for 221 yards and two touchdowns.

Salter joins the Blue Bombers after spending his NCAA career at Middle Tennessee State University. During his time with the Blue Raiders, the Atlanta, Georgia native hauled in 21 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns. Salter also spent time with the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL.

Taylor brings plenty of experience to Winnipeg after his five-year NCAA career with the Pittsburg State University Gorillas. The six-foot-three, 214-pound native of Manhattan, Kansas recorded 169 career tackles and four-and-a-half sacks during his collegiate career. In 2018, Taylor was selected as a team captain and named to the All Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association team.

Barnes appeared in all 11 games for the Northern State University Wolves rushing for 389 yards and three touchdowns in 2021. Prior to last year, the five-foot-nine, 190-pound Barnes spent time at Minnesota State University playing receiver. The Bloomington, Minnesota native tallied 1,287 all-purpose yards and 11 touchdowns for the Minnetonka Skippers and earned all-conference accolades in his final season.

Jackson spent four years at Duke University before graduating and transferring to Georgia Southern for the 2021 season. The Hoganville, Georgia native was a leader in the secondary and made his presence felt on special teams. The five-foot-11, 195-pound Jackson’s most noticeable play came against Georgia Tech where he scooped up a block punt and returned it for a touchdown. His two pass breakups against Temple in the Independence Bowl were tied for second most in Blue Devils history.

The club was also informed that quarterback Chase Litton will not be reporting to training camp at this time, which is not CBA related.
