Grey Cup-winning kicker Sergio Castillo teases Elks signing on Twitter

Former NFL kicker Sergio Castillo appears to have signed with the Edmonton Elks, according to a tweet shared by him on Saturday night.

Castillo finished the 2021 season with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, helping the the team win the 108th Grey Cup with a five field goal performance against Hamilton. In five games with the blue and gold, he connected on 12-of-14 field goals and eight-of-nine converts.

Castillo opted out of his two-year Canadian Football League contract with the B.C. Lions in August of 2020 after the cancellation of the season to pursue opportunities in the National Football League. He played in seven games that year with the New York Jets, connecting on 8-of-13 field goals, including a 55-yarder. He spent 2021 training camp with the Tennessee Titans.

The Mexican-American kicker has appeared in 38 CFL games over four seasons with the Bombers (2015), Ottawa Redblacks (2016), Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2017) and the Lions (2019). Castillo was named a league all-star in 2019 with B.C. after connecting on 41-of-45 field-goal attempts (91.1 percent), including five field goals covering 50 yards or longer.

Castillo holds a career field goal percentage of 86.1 in the CFL, having made 87-of-101 attempts. He also has a career convert percentage of 90.7 in the three-down league.

Castillo was signed as an undrafted NFL free agent by the Atlanta Falcons in 2014, but made his professional debut with Winnipeg in October of 2015, making all five of his field goal attempts. He finished that year going 10-of-13 for the Blue Bombers before Justin Medlock was signed in free agency in 2016.
