Insider Talk: Jones complains, Dobson signs with USFL, biggest overpay in free agency

Insider Talk is a weekly feature on 3DownNation that includes anonymous quotes from people around the CFL — players, coaches, personnel people, executives, agents, etc. — regarding the latest news around the league. It’s a combination of insight, analysis, rumours, and friendly gossip.

This week’s Insider Talk is full of discussion regarding the aftermath of CFL free agency, Derrick Jones calling out the Calgary Stampeders for not releasing him, the possibility of increasing the number of Canadians on CFL rosters, Calgary being a possible bounce-back team in 2022, and Canadian offensive lineman Liam Dobson signing with the USFL.

Enjoy this week’s quotes and come back next week for another edition of Insider Talk.

The biggest overpay in free agency was B.C. giving (former Montreal Alouettes’ defensive tackle) Woody Baron $190,000. That’s more than Dylan Wynn got (from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats).

Signing with the USFL seems like a risky move for (Canadian offensive lineman Liam) Dobson with limited upside. He’ll never make $200,000 a year in the USFL. Drew Desjarlais just signed with the Patriots, which shows that the CFL is still a viable route to the NFL for young linemen. I don’t see how this helps Dobson now or in the future.

Athletes calling out franchises for not allowing them to reneg on their contract is the epitome of what’s wrong with social media. To (Calgary Stampeders’ linebacker Derrick) Jones and those siding with him: put down your phones and pick up a book. Contract law wouldn’t be a bad place to start.

I think signing with the USFL makes perfect sense for Liam Dobson. If he plays really well, he’ll get signed by an NFL team. If the league folds, he can still sign a CFL contract for 2022. I think both of those outcomes are more likely than him still being there in 2023.

(Saskatchewan Roughriders’) Garrett Marino could be the best defensive tackle in the CFL if he just figures things out. He runs too hot and takes too many stupid penalties.

I can’t tell you how happy I am that we’re having a proper in-person combine this year. Those videos (from the 2020 and 2021 virtual combines) were a joke. I want real times, real measurements, and real evaluation.

I think Calgary will bounce back (in 2022). They were a scary team going into the playoffs and now they’ll get a full season out of (receiver Reggie) Begelton and (cornerback Tre) Roberson. If (quarterback) Bo (Levi Mitchell) is back to 100 percent, they could win the West Division.

The best way to combat losing young Americans to the USFL and XFL is having more Canadians on rosters and in starting lineups. We used to start ten. We could do it again.
