The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed American defensive back Jermaine Ponder.
He spent part of the 2021 CFL season on the Montreal Alouettes practice squad.
The six-foot-two, 200-pound Ponder signed with the Cleveland Browns after going unselected in the 2019 NFL Draft. He went on to participate in training camps with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans and recorded an interception against the Los Angeles Rams during the pre-season.
The 27-year-old was chosen by the Seattle Dragons in the 2019 XFL Draft and earned his way on to the active roster March 3, 2020, shortly before the season abruptly ended.
Ponder spent four years at Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA. He suited up in 35 games for the Red Flash making 34 tackles, defending 18 passes, recording two interceptions and one tackle for loss.
The Rochester, NY native was named second-team all-Northeast Conference after his senior season in 2018. He set a school record with 16 passes defended, 15 pass breakups and one interception. Those totals led the Northeast Conference and ranked fifth in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision.
