The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have signed star linebacker Simoni Lawrence to a contract extension for the 2022 season.

Lawrence was slated to become a free agent on Tuesday, February 8, but he decided against trying the open market to stay in the Hammer for another year.

“I love Hamilton… my agent gets mad at me every time that I say that I want to come back because he feels like he could get some more money elsewhere,” Lawrence said in December.

“This is what I bleed, this is who I love. If I’m playing football in Canada, this is where I want to be — Hamilton’s just a place full with love.”

The 32-year-old has played 127 games over eight seasons with the Ticats (2013-2021) and ranks first all-time in franchise total tackles (609) and defensive tackles (602).

The six-foot-one, 231-pound native of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania started all 14 regular seasons games during the shortened schedule and three playoff games for the black and gold in 2021.

Lawrence finished top 10 in the CFL in numerous categories including first in defensive touchdowns (tie-2), fifth in defensive tackles (73), sixth in interceptions (tie-3) and eighth in total tackles (73).

“Simoni’s energy and personality is infectious,” said president of football operations and head coach, Orlondo Steinauer. “He is an all-time Tiger-Cat and an all-time person and we could not be happier that he and his family have chosen to remain in Hamilton and with the Tiger-Cats organization.”

The University of Minnesota product was named the East Division’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player for the third time in his career in 2021 (2015, 2019, 2021) while also earning his third CFL all-star selection (2015, 2019, 2021) and his fifth CFL East Division All-Star (2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021) honours.

Lawrence spent one season with Edmonton (2012) registering 26 total tackles before being traded to Hamilton in 2013.
