Back for more: Edmonton Elks re-sign DB Aaron Grymes, four others

The Edmonton Elks have re-signed defensive back Aaron Grymes along with global receiver Diego Viamontes, global defensive lineman Tibo Debaillie, national offensive lineman Peter Kourtis, and American offensive lineman Emanuel McGirt.

Grymes, a seven-year CFL veteran, has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him in Green and Gold through the 2023 season.

The 30-year-old registered 51 defensive tackles and one interception in 13 starts at field-side halfback in 2021. The University of Idaho product played one season with the B.C. Lions in 2019 but the rest of his career has been spent in Edmonton.

Grymes has made 286 defensive tackles, 19 special teams tackles, 13 interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one sack in 95 career regular season games, winning a Grey Cup and being named a CFL all-star in 2015.

Viamontes, the first overall selection by Edmonton in the 2019 CFL-LFA Draft, has inked a two-year extension, while Debaillie is now signed through 2024. Viamontes appeared in three regular season games for the Elks over the last two seasons, while Debaillie appeared in three games during his rookie campaign in 2021.

Edmonton’s fifth-round pick in the 2021 CFL Draft, Kourtis has been signed to a three-year deal after suiting up with the Green and Gold during training camp last season. The Toronto, Ont. product played four games in 2021 with the Saint Mary’s Huskies of Atlantic University Sport, finishing his collegiate career with 28 career regular season games.

Originally signed by the Elks on October 20, 2021, McGirt was on Edmonton’s practice roster during his time north of the border and has signed a three-year deal. The Durham, North Carolina product spent 2015 through 2019 at North Carolina State.
