Nick Arbuckle won’t dress for Edmonton Elks’ season finale

The Edmonton Elks have released their depth chart for their regular season finale against the B.C. Lions and Nick Arbuckle is not listed under centre.

Taylor Cornelius will make his sixth consecutive start under centre with Dakota Prukop serving as his backup. This is the same quarterback arrangement Edmonton had for their recent loss to Saskatchewan and victory over Toronto.

Edmonton acquired Arbuckle in a trade with the Toronto Argonauts back on Oct. 26 in exchange for a conditional 2022 CFL Draft pick and the rights to negotiation list quarterback Chad Kelly.

The Elks signed the quarterback to a one-year contract soon thereafter, extending him through the 2022 season. As such, the Argos have received Edmonton’s second-round pick in the 2022 CFL Draft as part of the trade.

Originally signed by the Calgary Stampeders out of Georgia State in 2017, Arbuckle has played in 43 career CFL regular season games, completing 287-of-416 attempts, with 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Edmonton’s decision not to play Arbuckle comes as somewhat of a surprise given that they’ve financially committed to him for the 2022 season and the team’s compressed schedule. The Elks will be playing their third game in seven days when the visit the Lions, yet they’ve elected not to rest Cornelius.

The rookie has lost all seven of his starts this season, completing 154-of-268 pass attempts (57.5 percent) for 1,928 yards, nine touchdowns, and twelve interceptions.

The Elks and Lions are set to play on Friday at 10:30 p.m. in what will be the final game of the season for both clubs. Michael Reilly will not dress for the Lions with Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke set to make his second career start for B.C.
