The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed former B.C. Lions and Edmonton Elks’ running back Shaq Cooper.

The 28-year-old was released by the B.C. Lions last week. He recorded 33 carries for 142 yards and one touchdown in five games with the team as well as 11 receptions for 69 yards. He joined the team as a free agent in February 2021.

The Fort Hays State product started four games in 2019 with the Edmonton Elks and ran the ball 65 times for 352 yards and two touchdowns along with 15 receptions for 112 yards.

The five-foot-ten, 190-pound ball carrier was a star over three seasons in the NCAA with the Tigers (2012, 2015-2016). He rushed 456 times for 2,768 yards and 19 touchdowns while making 73 receptions for 736 yards and ten scores.

Cooper is a speedy one-cut back who can make an impact as a receiver out of the backfield.

Andrew Harris suffered a knee injury in Winnipeg’s recent victory over the Edmonton Elks. He missed practice on Tuesday due to the injury and it appears Cooper should help provide some depth in the backfield.
