The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have named Dane Evans the starting quarterback for the Labour Day Classic against the Toronto Argonauts.
Evans took first-team reps at practice for the majority of the preparation week while Jeremiah Masoli continues to deal with an injury to his ribs.
“It feels like right now that’s just what we’re going to do. If we had Jeremiah out there, it’d feel great, too. Very confident in both quarterbacks, this is the quote unquote ‘luxury’ that we have in having two guys that we feel can get the job done,” head coach Orlondo Steinauer said.
“We think it’s going to take both of ’em to accomplish our goals this year. This is just one of those weeks where it’s going to be Dane’s turn again. I definitely feel good, but I would feel just as good if Jeremiah was out there.”
Evans completed 15-of-22 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions in the Ticats first win of the season versus the Montreal Alouettes in Week 4. Hamilton (1-2) had gone 0-2 with Masoli as the starter in two road games against Winnipeg and Saskatchewan to begin the season.
It’s the second start for Evans on the holiday Monday. In 2019 Evans started on Labour Day, completing 31-of-37 passes (83.8 percent) for 442 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in a 38-27 win over the QEW rival Argos. He also rushed four times for 42 yards and one major in the victory.
The Tiger-Cats are trying for a seventh straight win in the Labour Day Classic.
