Canadian RB Chuba Hubbard rips 59-yard run in NFL preseason debut

Canadian running back Chuba Hubbard didn’t take long to make an impact in his first taste of NFL preseason action.

The native of Sherwood Park, Alta. broke a carry on third-and-one for a 59-yard gain against the Indianapolis Colts in his first NFL preseason game. He finished the first half with seven carries for 80 yards and one reception for two yards.

The Carolina Panthers selected Hubbard in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State, where he was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2019. He was also a fifth-round pick of the Calgary Stampeders in the 2021 CFL Draft, though he plans to maximize his opportunity in the NFL before considering signing north of the border.

Former first-round draft pick Christian McCaffrey is firmly entrenched as Carolina’s starting running back, though Hubbard has a chance to serve as his primary backup. Performances like the one he put forth on Sunday should help make that a reality.

The Panthers open their 2021 regular season on Sunday, Sept. 12 with a visit from the New York Jets.
