Edmonton Elks superfan Brian D. Edwards has passed away.
The unfortunate news was reported by Mike Smith-Knutsen of The Turf District Podcast, a popular fan podcast out of Edmonton.
With a heavy heart, it saddens me that I won’t get to watch an @Elks game with @Elkinator_42 again. A bigger fan of the @CFL you will never find and his unwavering loyalty to his team and his city were as big as anyone’s. Godspeed, Brian. I will miss you, my brother. #OnceAlways
Smith-Knutsen’s post garnered an overwhelming response from the CFL community. Many tweets were from people who had met Edwards personally, but others were from those who interacted with him exclusively through social media.
With the internet, you are able to “meet” many people even if only by their online name. I never met him in person, but this is an enormous loss to the #CFLFamily, wrote fellow podcaster Tim Capper.
Edwards was so well-known in the Edmonton CFL community that Michael Reilly, who quarterbacked the team for six season, wrote a tribute to him on Twitter.
Just hearing about and extremely saddened by the news of Brian Edwards (@Elkinator_42) passing. He was a tremendous and passionate fan but more importantly a great guy. You will be missed…
The CFL community is a special place that is made up of people from all walks of life. Its members include active players, retired players, coaches, executives, and members of the media, but mostly it’s made up of fans. Edwards was a special fan — someone who cared about the CFL as much as anyone.
3DownNation would like to extend its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Brian D. Edwards at this difficult time. He will be missed.
