Canadian linebackers Nick Shortill and Nelkas Kwemo are planning to retire instead of reporting to the Toronto Argonauts this season, according to TSN’s Farhan Lalji.
Shortill signed with the Argos in February 2020 following a five-year career with the Montreal Alouettes and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The McMaster product made 54 career defensive tackles, 58 special teams tackles, and one sack in 68 career regular season games.
Kwemo was a second-round pick of the Argonauts out of Queen’s in the 2018 CFL Draft. He recorded 16 defensive tackles and 31 special teams tackles in 28 career regular season games. He re-signed with Toronto in December 2020, forgoing free agency.
It is possible that we’ll see the linebacker return at some point in 2021. Lalji reported that both will be placed on the suspended list as Shortill completes his Master’s degree and Kwemo pursues other job opportunities.
Toronto still has a pair of elite Canadian linebackers under contract in Henoc Muamba and Cameron Judge, but the departures of Shortill and Kwemo will hamper their depth.
