Special teams coordinator AJ Gass leaves Elks for personal reasons

Edmonton Elks’ special teams coordinator and linebackers coach AJ Gass has departed the organization for personal reasons.

Gass spent two separate stints as a member of the team’s coaching staff. After retiring as a player in 2007, he served the 2008 season as a defensive assistant under then-head coach Danny Maciocia.

Gass would return to the green and gold in 2019 as the special teams coordinator, before adding linebackers coach to his duties.

The Bellflower, CA native played 10 seasons for Edmonton from 1998 to 2007. He was a ferocious linebacker who was part of two Grey Cup championships teams (2003 and 2005) while earning four league all-star awards.

In 131 career CFL games, the six-foot-one, 200-pound linebacker made 440 tackles, 92 special teams tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 13 pass knockdowns, 12 quarterback sacks, eight forced fumbles, 10 fumble returns and three interceptions.
