The Saskatchewan Roughriders selected defensive back Nelson Lokombo with the second overall pick in the 2021 Canadian Football League Draft on Tuesday night.
The University of Saskatchewan product recorded 115 total tackles, six tackles for loss, 15 pass knockdowns, ten interceptions, three sacks, and two forced fumbles in 30 games with the Huskies.
He received the Presidents’ Trophy in 2019 as the top defensive player in U Sports football, beating out 2020 CFL draft picks Jack Cassar, Bailey Feltmate, and Andrew Seinet-Spaulding. The award has previously been given to players such as Cory Greenwood, Henoc Muamba, and Adam Auclair.
Lokombo was one of the 2021 CFL Draft’s most versatile talents, capable of playing cornerback, halfback, safety, and strong-side linebacker. His best CFL comparable could be Tunde Adeleke of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who has quickly established himself as one of the league’s best young national defenders.
