Former CFL all-star Diontae Spencer has signed his tendered a contract for the 2021 NFL season with the Denver Broncos.
Spencer’s agent David Canter shared the news on Twitter. He will receive an $850,000 salary that is the minimum for players with two years of service time — a $100,000 increase from the 2020 minimum for second-year players, as per the new collective bargaining agreement.
Spencer returned 16 punts for 253 yards and one touchdown, it was an 83-yard score for the first TD of his NFL career. He added 15 kick-off returns for 281 yards. The 29-year-old ranked second in the league with a 15.8 punt return average. The Broncos used him on offence, rushing three times for 19 yards and catching three passes for 26 yards.
After earning the main returner role in the Mile High City in 2019, Spencer had 26 punt returns for 208 yards, including two 20-plus yarders and one 40-plus yarder along with 15 kick-off returns for 436 yards, three over 40 yards. He caught six passes for 31 yards with a long of 20 on offence.
Through two seasons in the NFL, Spencer has earned over $1.1 million.
The McNeese State University product had his first 1,000-yard receiving season in 2018. He earned a CFL all-star nod for the first time in his career while recording 2,691 total yards and eight touchdowns. In 2017 Spencer set a new CFL single-game mark with 496 all-purpose yards in one game.
