Rider Nation is everywhere — every corner of the continent.
One Riders fan was spotted wearing his favourite team’s hat along with a Canada mask and t-shirt to support Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu in Miami on Saturday.
Andreescu was taking on Australian Ashleigh Barty in the final of the Miami Open at Hard Rock Stadium. She was trying for her first tournament win since the 2019 U.S. Open, but the luck of the Green and White didn’t help her. The 20-year-old lost 6-4, 4-0 to Barty after suffering a right ankle injury.
It’s the first sighting of a Roughriders fan at a live sporting event since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many in Riderville are hoping they’ll be able to support their beloved team on television or in person this year.
The CFL has been holding meetings with the players’ association since mid-February and sent return-to-play proposals to various levels of government at the end of that month. They are now pending approval from doctors and health experts.
The three-down league reportedly lost between $60 and $80 million in 2020 after cancelling its season. That came immediately after the federal government let the league know there would not be a $30-million interest-free loan to fund a hub city in the Manitoba capital.
Even though football hasn’t been on the field since November 2019, the Riders fans are still representing.
