Insider Talk: free agency, market crash & the CFL’s new highest-paid non-quarterback

This week’s edition of Insider Talk was bumped by a day for our coverage of free agency, but don’t worry — it just gave me an extra day to gather material.

This weekly feature on 3DownNation includes anonymous quotes from people around the CFL regarding the latest news around the league.

Enjoy this week’s quotes and come back on Wednesday of next week for another edition of Insider Talk.

Matt O’Donnell and Henoc Muamba are in trouble. The market is crashing by the day, so offers will be going down — not up.

I’m shocked at how things turned out with those two receivers. I was positive that Bryan Burnham was going to end up in Winnipeg and Kenny Lawler was going to end up in B.C.

***

The sense we all got from Evan Johnson in the draft was that he didn’t care about going back home to Saskatchewan. Maybe that changed as the years in Ottawa went on. I don’t know for sure, but I do know the Riders gave him a great offer.

No team I’ve ever worked for would have allowed us to cut Nick Arbuckle like Ottawa did. That team spent twelve months marketing him as ‘the guy.’ He moved there and was all over the community doing good things. The optics of cutting him are terrible.

I don’t know if that number ($15,000) floating around about Charleston Hughes is accurate or not, but if it is, (Saskatchewan Roughriders’ GM Jeremy) O’Day deserves all of the negative press he’s getting. You can’t lose a player of that calibre over that much money.

***

The Bombers are really high on Sean McGuire. That’s why they didn’t go out and sign a backup quarterback in free agency.

***

I read that article on your site saying Brock Sunderland would have been looking over his shoulder if he hired Chris Jones. That thing was bang on. Jones wants power and he’ll step on anybody to get it.

***

The new highest-paid non-quarterback in the CFL is (Edmonton Football Team national defensive end) Kwaku Boateng.

***

Lucky Whitehead might do some returning in B.C., but he really wants to be a full-time receiver.
