Jeremiah Masoli is making it rain in Steeltown.
The 2018 East Division all-star signed a one-year extension with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Wednesday worth $350,000, including a $125,000 signing bonus. The deal also includes incentives that could bring the deal closer to $370,000.
The 32-year-old became Hamilton’s starting quarterback in 2017 after June Jones was named the club’s new head coach. He’s been one of the CFL’s most consistent passers since, earning an East Division all-star nod in 2018.
In 2019, the Mississippi product led the team to its best start since 1998 at 5-1. He completed 71 per cent of his passes for 1,576 yards with nine touchdowns against seven interceptions, adding 17 carries for 79 yards and four touchdowns in parts of six games.
Masoli’s season was ended prematurely by an ACL tear in Week 7. Last week a video was posted to social media showing him perform a number of drills, proving he’s since made a full recovery.
The franchise quarterback’s new contract is another example of how the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced player salaries.
Masoli earned over $700,000 on a two-year deal that covered the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He got a substantial raise in December 2019 despite having not fully recovered from his ACL tear at the time. He was set to make approximately $450,000 in 2020 prior to the cancellation of the season.
The San Francisco native has recorded 13,110 career passing yards along with 70 touchdowns and 45 interceptions. He is also an effective runner, having rushed 224 times for 1,323 yards and 18 scores.
Masoli was set to become a free agent on February 9. He will now return to Steeltown where he and Dane Evans form arguably the best quarterback duo in the CFL.
