Riders ink two along the defensive line

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed American defensive lineman Garrett Marino for the 2021 season

Marino comes to the Riders after signing with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2020.The six-foot-two, 290-pounder was a highly rated interior lineman going into the 2020 NFL draft, after a strong collegiate career at the University of Alabama Birmingham. At his pro day, the 26-year-old ran a 4.89 40-yard dash and put up 41 official reps on bench press. 

Over 40 games as a Blazer, Marino made 95 total tackles, 28 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 10 pass deflections, nine quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries including one returned 48 yards for a touchdown and a blocked kick.

As a senior, he was named First Team All-Conference USA after receiving honourable mentions in his junior and sophomore seasons. The California native also played in the 2020 Shrine Bowl, making two tackles and one tackle for loss.  

Additionally, American defensive lineman Trenton Thompson has opted back into his contract for the 2021 season.

The six-foot-three, 295-pound Thompson signed with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in the spring of 2018. After his time in Cleveland, Thompson played for the AAF’s Arizona Hotshots and most recently was a part of the XFL’s Team 9.  

Collegiately, the 24-year-old played three seasons at the University of Georgia, where he recorded 127 career tackles, 16 tackles for a loss and six sacks in 37 games and was part of the 2017 Bulldogs team that won the SEC Championship.

Prior to committing to the Bulldogs, Thompson was a highly sought-after high school recruit and was named the All-USA National Defensive Player of the Year.
