The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have inked a deal with Canadian defensive end Mason Bennett, locking up their first round selection in the 2020 CFL Draft.
The signing was first reported by The Spring League Twitter account. Bennett was a part of the league’s 2020 season, playing for the TSL Blues after the CFL canceled its season.
Bennett was selected by the Ticats eight overall, becoming the fourth player from the University of North Dakota to be drafted in the first round in CFL history. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native was limited to just 10 games in 2019 due to injury, but still managed to lead the Fighting Hawks in sacks with 5.5 and five quarterback hurries while finishing tied for second on the team in tackles for loss at 6.5.
He returned from injury on November 16 and didn’t miss a beat, recording five tackles for loss, four sacks, two quarterback hurries, one pass breakup, and one forced fumble over that three-game stretch to earn AP All-America third-team honors. For his career, Bennett finished as the top sack artist in UND’s DI history and second all-time with 20.0.
Bennett has the potential to be an ratio-breaking talent at defensive end for the Ticats and should make an immediate impact in 2021.
