The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed American quarterback Sean McGuire on a one-year extension for the 2021 season.
McGuire was scheduled to be a free agent in February.
The six-foot-two, 220-pounder will be entering his second CFL season after signing with the Bombers in May 2019. He dressed for all 18 regular season games and the post-season during the 2019 Grey Cup-winning season.
McGuire saw action in two of those games – both against Calgary near the end of the regular season – completing two of three passes for 17 yards and rushing three times for 19 yards.
“It’s really great to have Sean return for 2021,” offensive coordinator Buck Pierce said. “He’s an extremely hard worker, has very high football IQ, and has all the physical tools to go along with that. I really believe he has a bright future in our league ahead of him.”
McGuire put up spectacular numbers during his time with the Western Illinois University Fighting Leathernecks and left as the school’s all-time leader in passing yards (9,819), passing touchdowns (72), completions (771) and attempts (1,291).
His 9,819 passing yards ranks second all-time in the history of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. McGuire was named the school’s male senior athlete of the year in 2018 and was an honourable mention All-Missouri Valley Conference player in 2016 and 2017.
