Former CFL media relations professional Jamie Cartmell has been hired by the Edmonton Oilers, per sources.
Cartmell has earned the title of Director of Hockey Communications with the Oilers. In Edmonton, he’ll take care of media relations for the Oilers and be the point person for stars such as Connor McDavid and Leon Drisaitl.
A graduate of Grant McEwan College in Edmonton, Cartmell spent two years as a speech writer for Edmonton City Council before entering the CFL. Cartmell made five visits to the Grey Cup during his time in the league, earning four championship rings.
The 2019 season was his 14th year with the B.C. Lions and 19th season in the CFL after spending four seasons with Edmonton (2002-2005). He was the longest-serving communications executive in Lions team history as well as the CFL’s most senior communications professional.
As a key member of the Lions senior management team, Cartmell provided strategic communications expertise to the franchise while also serving as the first point of contact for all members of the media. He was also responsible for publications such as the Lions media guide, training camp notebook, season summary, game notes and media releases while writing for the Lions’ website and game day program.
Cartmell was well-respected through the CFL and starts a new venture in the NHL.
