R-Nation has secured a key local product for the 2021 season.

Canadian defensive back Justin Howell has signed a one-year contract extension with the Ottawa Redblacks, per source. He was set to become a free agent in February.

The native of Bradford, Ont. played locally at Carleton University before being selected in the seventh round of the 2018 CFL draft.

Howell has since appeared in 27 regular season games, making 37 total tackles and one sack. He started games at safety in 2018 and 2019 as veteran starter Antoine Pruneau missed time due to injury.

The five-foot-ten, 200-pound defender remains just 24 years old and will look to fill a key depth role with the Redblacks again in 2021.
