The Bama-Brampton connection is real.

Canadian John Metchie III led the Crimson Tide with five receptions for 72 yards, improving his season totals to 40 catches for 720 yards and six touchdowns. The native of Brampton, Ontario would likely have put up bigger statistics but Alabama rested a number of its starters after building a 45-3 lead following the first drive of the third quarter.

“John Metchie has to be a force out there,” head coach Nick Saban said in his post-game video conference.

The sophomore remains Alabama’s second-leading receiver on the campaign behind senior DeVonta Smith. The projected first-round NFL draft pick entered Saturday’s game with 80 receptions for 1,305 yards and 15 touchdowns, though he had a quiet receiving game with 22 yards on three catches. Smith did return a punt return 84 yards for a touchdown, adding to his Heisman Trophy resume.

Alabama will meet No. 6 Florida and Heisman candidate, quarterback Kyle Trask in next week’s SEC Championship Game. The Crimson Tide have won five SEC titles since 2012, although last year’s title was won by the eventual national champions, the Louisiana State University Tigers.

The attention will provide Metchie III with an even bigger stage to showcase his talents as he looks to establish himself as one of the top receivers available in the 2022 or 2023 NFL draft.
