North iron strong: Canadian John Metchie III scores two touchdowns in Alabama’s Iron Bowl blowout

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide used its Canadian content on Saturday en route to a blowout victory over Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

Brampton, Ont. native John Metchie III continued establishing himself as one of the best receivers in NCAA football on Saturday, making six receptions for 55 yards and two touchdowns.

The first score came one a seven-yard catch from Heisman Trophy candidate, quarterback Mac Jones at the start of the second quarter. Metchie III ran a quick post route from a bunch formation to the field-side and made the reception.

His second touchdown came early in the fourth quarter from 24 yards out on a double move. Metchie III was the second receiver to the field and used his quickness and precision route-running to break open.

Metchie III has had a stellar sophomore season with a 31 receptions for 590 yards and six touchdowns. He is currently on track for the 2023 NFL draft, though he could choose to declare after his junior year to be eligible in 2022.

After head coach Nick Saban tested positive for COVID-19, he was watching from home, but still No. 1 ranked Alabama improved to 8-0 with a 42-13 victory in the rivalry game.

“I think I did yell at the TV a couple times today,” Saban said in his post-game video conference from his recruiting room which can hold approximately 60-70 people.

The defending College Football Playoff champion Louisiana State University is the next opponent on the Crimson Tide schedule, which will be another opportunity for Metchie III to shine in prime time on Saturday night, December 5 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
