Edmonton Football Team president and chief operating officer Chris Presson has ruled out perhaps the most popular potential new name for the franchise.
In social media polls, including 3DownNation’s, Empire led the way for what the EE Football Team should choose as their new team name. However, it won’t be the clubhouse leader.
“I think it would be an issue. That’s the most prominent name we’ve been asked about thus far and I think that would be a challenging name for us to take on. People have asked have you registered any names because we see that you’ve registered the word Empire,” Presson told Mark Connolly on CBC Edmonton AM radio.
“We did register some segment of Empire several years ago simply because that was our marketing campaign. But I do think there is too much of a negative connotation around that for that to be our name.”
Empire has a connection to colonialism, which is a practice of domination and involves the subjugation of one group of people to another.
The Edmonton Football Team board of directors made the decision to discontinue the use of the word “Eskimo” in the team’s name and are starting the process of selecting a new moniker.
The Empire has fallen in Edmonton.
