New B.C. Lions head coach Rick Campbell will have one of his top players join him on the west coast.

The Lions announced the signing of defensive lineman J.R. Tavai to a one year deal on the opening day of CFL free agency. Tavai joins the Lions after spending the last two seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks.

2019 was a particularly productive year for Tavai as he led the Redblacks with seven sacks. He also added another 49 tackles and three forced fumbles. Tavai was also fined for a headshot on Montreal Alouettes quarterback Vernon Adams Jr.

In 2018, Tavai played in six games where he picked up six tackles and seven special teams tackles.

Before joining the Redblacks, Tavai spent some time with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent out of USC, mostly on their practice squad.
